《Why I Write》George Orwell

Sheer egoism – ‘Desire to seem clever, to be talked about, to be remembered after death, to get your own back on grown-ups who snubbed you in childhood, etc. It is humbug to pretend that this is not a motive, and a strong one. Writers share this characteristics with scientists, artists, politicians, lawyers, solders, successful businessmen – in short, with the whole top crust of humanity.’

Aesthetic enthusiasm – ‘Perception of beauty in the external world, or, on the other hand, in words and their right arrangement. Pleasure in the impact of one sound on another, in the firmness of good prose or the rhythm of a good story. Desire to share an experience which one feels is valuable and ought not to be missed.’

Historical impulse
– ‘Desire to see things as they are, to find out true facts and store them up for the use of posterity.’

Political purpose – ‘Using the word “political” in the widest possible sense. Desire to push the world in a certain direction, to alter other people’s idea of the kind of society that they should strive after. Once again, no book is genuinely free from political bias. The opinion that art should have nothing to do with politics is itself a political attitude.’

Political language is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind.

Susan Sontag

The method especially appeals to people handicapped by a ruthless work ethic – Germans, Japanese and Americans. Using a camera appeases the anxiety which the work driven feel about not working when they are on vacation and supposed to be having fun. They have something to do that is like a friendly imitation of work: they can take pictures.

photographed images do not seem to be statements about the world so much as pieces of it, miniatures of reality that anyone can make or acquire’.It is a slice in time and in effect, is more memorable than moving images for example, videos. It fills the gaps in our mind of the past and present.Even though photography has such effect, there are limits to photographic knowledge of the world. The limitations are that it can never be interpreted ethical or political knowledge. It will always be some kind of sentimentalism, whether cynical or humanist. Our modern day society can be described as a society feeding on aesthetic consumerism. There is an addiction and a need to constantly have reality confirmed and experiences enhanced by photographs.

Donald Kwan R.I.P.

Blog

那字是a.r.t.i.s.t. artist對吧

yeah

絕對不是my cup of tea

寫着dedicated to L. K. M.
